For those who still think folk music is something played on banjos by bearded men in overalls, the music of John Egenes just might change their minds. Sophisticated songwriting doesn’t have to be elitist, and quality musicianship doesn’t have to be inaccessible to mere mortals.
Egenes is an Executant Lecturer in Contemporary Music at Otago University as well as an active founding member of NZMiC. His latest CD, “Up For Air” was recorded at Albany St. Studios. In addition to working as a multi-instrumentalist recording session player and producer for other artists, he is currently at work on another CD of his own songs, slated for release later this year.
